Wednesdays with Weenie
Viva la Long Island!
A whole lotta Italian food was delivered via UPS on Wednesday courtesy of John and Diane Pilger in New York. Check out the complete list of goodies here. We might have to roll people out of the Tech Center before the end of the week!
The Gate Arrives
After months of design and planning, the gates are delivered! Ron and Renée Brigman arrived with the gates for the dumpster surround Tuesday evening after an adventurous drive from South Carolina. The gates were built by Renée's sister and brother-in-law with this project in mind. Once the group saw the finished product, they quickly determined that they were much too grand for a dumpster surround. Driveway measurements were taken, deliberations were held... Consensus: Store the gates until the Town of Plainfield approves their placement as a Sweeps Week 2008 project. The iron gates weigh approx. 350 each and were provided to Sweeps Week at not even a 1/4 of what they'd go for normally! Now, where to put them...
Making Change
The pocket change Jim Baynes mentioned in his July Newslink letter to Region 3 weighed in at 6lbs for a $47.39 donation to Sweeps Week projects.

The Three Musketeers
Or, based on the uncontrollable laughter heard at lunch, maybe this post should be titled "The Three Amigos". Kevin DeLucenay, Jim Baynes and Marion Schroll got Sweeps Week 2007 off to a rolling start this morning. (We'll let Kevin fill you in on the details of today's progress.)Marion, our chef out of Manhattan (Kansas), arrived early to line the shelves (and kitchen table) with the needed ingredients to keep everyone fed and happy. He's made sure that these guys are getting three square meals to keep them going. Thanks, Marion!
While not the most "sexy" project to work on, the dumpster surround was in dire need of maintenance and the project is going to be highly appreciated. The old surround had a solidly built foundation, but was "well-weathered" and ready for a facelift.
Kevin and Jim were serious when they said they were donating "sweat equity". With highs in the 90s today, they had their work cut out for them. Pulling out the posts was definitely a two-person job! Kevin and Jim were up to the task. And they kept going...
and going...
Until the three musketeers called it a day!
If you have a little time on your hands this week and are in the area, consider dropping by the Tech Center to lend a helping hand. You'll be well-fed, make some new friends and are guaranteed to hear some tall tales from some of the finest storytellers in the industry.

SWEEPS WEEK 2007
July 9 to July 13, 2007
The sixth annual sweeps week is almost upon us! We have a slight change of plans for this year. Instead of a masonry surround, we have to build the dumpster surround out of wood instead of brick. Jim Baynes has been battling with the City of Plainfield. Unfortunately, the old saying of “you can’t fight City Hall” has rang true once again. So, we are switching gears and “repairing” the surround, rather than “replacing”. We are planning to tear down the old surround, except for one 4x4 and call it a “repair”. We will be building this surround using 6x6 posts (except for the single 4x4), and using cedar instead of treated lumber. It will be a very attractive structure. We will still be using wrought iron gates that Ron and Renee Brigman have been working so hard on. (Thanks guys!). We will be using wood stain from SaverSystems to finish off this beautiful addition to our Tech Center. Since my company has been building the finest cedar gazebos and decks in northeast Indiana for over 20 years, I already have a very nice design in mind.
There are also some smaller projects the staff has requested that we may try to accomplish, depending on the manpower available. We need your help! Don’t worry about your skills, if you have a pulse, you can be helpful to us. So, think about coming to Indy for a day or two. If you cannot come in person, send us a small donation. If you would rather, send us some local cuisine to help feed the troops. I still remember the first time I had Cajun food, sent by John Bordelon, and who can forget the “authentic” New York hot dogs the Pilgers sent?
I am looking forward to this week of hard work and good fun. It is like a big family reunion! Hope to see the usual folks, and hope to see some new faces this year!

SWEEPS WEEK 2007
SWEEPS WEEK 2007
JULY 9-13, 2007
CSIA Technology Center
Summer is trying to get here in Indiana. May not see any more snow! That means Sweeps Week is just around the corner. This year’s project is a “Very Fancy Dumpster Surround”. Trying to put a good spin on a dumpster surround is like putting lipstick on a pig! But, I guarantee this will be a very nice addition to our “home”. It will also be a nice way for a few folks to learn some things also. This will be a “hands-on training seminar”. We need some experienced folks, and some folks who want some experience. We are expecting most of our past veterans, but would like to see some new blood in the mix. If you have not experienced this week of camaraderie, you need to experience it in person. I guarantee that you will get more out of it than you put in it. So, plan a day or two (or 4 or 5) to come to our “home” in Indy.
Hope to see ya there!
